Hartley Vs Jaffna Hindu College (Over 40 years)

[30 Dec 2014]

Played on 6 October 2014 at Jones Park, Parramatta

After early departure of the openers Kannan showed some resistance and scored 17 runs against some fine bowling by Ramesh from Jaffna Hindu followed by some big hitting by our star all-rounder Johnson who stroked 60 with five elegant boundaries. We finished with an impressive 196 runs.

Jaffna Hindu fell short of the target by scoring only 129 with notable contributions of 25 runs from Kukku and 20 from Suba. If you were not at the ground to witness then you have missed an entertaining match. Man of the match was Johnson for his sixty runs and 4 for 23 with the ball. Vasee who scored a courageous 39 runs in the lower order that included 2 towering sixes won the best batsman award. Best bowler was Ramesh from Jaffna Hindu.

Hartley won the match comfortably by 67 runs.

Gopi plundered two sixes and two boundaries in the dying overs but remained unbeaten.

Royal could not match the brilliance exhibited by Hartley and folded for a mere 83 runs. Notable scores with the bat from Royal came from Raj Karu 17. Selva 15 and Nimalan 11. Praba and Nandan from Hartley sharing the bowling honours by capturing 3 wickets each and demolishing the opponents early in the play.

Hartley won the match by 105 runs with ease.

Re: Educational Development Projects in Mullaithivu - An update

[18 Apr 2014]

Dear friends,
As you are aware, Assist RR has been funding the above programme to assist O/L & A/L students in Mullaithivu district since June 2013. Serendip part funded (Rs 100,000 per month for 5 months) and stopped funding since the end of last year. Tamil Forum Malaysia has now agreed to pay 50% of the cost of this programme from the beginning of this year. Assist RR endeavour to fund the other 50% of the cost through Hartley College Past Pupils' Association of NSW, Australia's contribution of Rs 25,600 per month for one year, our existing Standing Order donations and Money Box collections from shops in the UK but would still need more. I attach a report to provide an update.

As part of this project, we recently carried out an evaluation process, assisted by Mr Sivasithamparam, ex Karaveddy Vigneswara College principal and Mr Gunalseelan, ex Point Pedro Hartley College principal. I attach the results of Mullaithivu zone, which are very encouraging and indicate that the pass rates have improved since 2011. However, the results show that they need more support especially in Chemistry and Physics.

Sivanarulillam had already agreed with the GA to do monthly weekend seminars/crash courses for A/L students, which are being organised by the same ex principals from Jaffna using teachers from Jaffna. Assist RR suggests that we should increase this frequency and organise extra assistance over weekends every two weeks. This means that we need to fund 50% of this weekend extra classes in Physics and Chemistry. We believe that with a bit more assistance, the students taking A/Ls this year would do a lot better than last year in Mullaithivu.

Following Assist RR's recent appeal for helping students with solar lamps, Anbaalayam and Tamil Engineers Foundation, both from Australia have provided funds to import 450 lamps from China. These lamps have arrived in Colombo and will be distributed to needy A/L students in remote areas of Thunukkai and villagers in Mullivaikal in April 2014. We could provide lamps to more needy students, could collect more funds.

Annual Cricket Hartley Vs Hindu

Cricket summary

The annual cricket match between Hartley College and Jaffna Hindu College was conducted on the 7 Oct 2013 at Jones Park Parramatta. This is the big sporting event in our calendar. As usual we had two games. One for open age group and the other one for over 40 age group.

This event was organised as family event. Families from each side were encouraged to come, support, and meet each other. Players and members from both schools brought delicious food for morning and lunch. We thank for that great effort first.

We should also mention the support of Excellent Jewellers for their continuous sponsorship for this annual event.

The weather was good on that. It started as sunny and became overcast. But, no rain interrupted the play. The match summary is given below:

Open age game

Jaffna Hindu won and toss and elected to bat first. Hartley bowlers bowled well in the opening overs and took 3 early wickets. Ranjaan and Vasanth bowled well at the beginning overs. Hindu was restricted to 5 for 104 in 25 overs. Nirmalan batted well and made 49 runs and Murali making 21 runs. But, it was Vijithan who really scored a quick fire 56 runs for Hindu to reach 206 at the end of 40 overs.

Vasanth, Ranjan, and Ananth bowled well for Hartley College. Hartley's run chase began poorly by losing two early wickets. However, Vasanth played a gem of an innings to march towards the required total. After losing 3 wickets for 44 runs Vasanth steadied the innings with the help of Vinoth. Both had a partnership of nearly 80 runs before Vinoth was out for 19 runs. Vasanth continued on and scored an excellent 84 runs. But, in the end Hartley could not cross the required runs and finished scoring 183 runs. It was a very close game and well done boys. Better luck next time. Nirmalan bowled well for Hindu by picking up 4 wickets.

Player of the match - Nirmalan (Hindu)
Best Batsman - Vasanth (Hartley)
Best bowler - Nirmalan (Hindu)
Best fielder - Ranjithan (Hindu)

Over 40 game

Again Jaffna Hindu won the toss and elected to bat first. Hindu lost their first wicket early. However, Viji and Ramesh played well and added nearly 80 runs partnership. They scored 45 and 35 runs respectively. It was then Suba who really batted well with a solid 52 runs. Sri and Naresh scored some quick runs at the end to help Hindu reach 221 runs in the 40 overs. For Hartley Johnson and Ragavan bowled well by picking up 3 and 2 wickets each.

Hartley began the run chase well with Kannan and Krishna opening the batting with a 54 run partnership. Krishna lost his wicket for 22 runs. Kannan continued on and scored 56 runs. Hartley lost their way in the middle overs. Baskaran's quick runs (23) at the end were not enough. Hartley was all out for 167.

Siva and Srikantha bowled well for Hindu by picking up 3 wickets each.

Player of the match - Subathasan
Best Batsman - Kannan
Best bowler - Siva
Best fielder - Manimaran

Special Appeal for Vision 2020

Update [06 Apr 2014]

"We would like to thank the members for their generous and quick response for this appeal. We have so far collected $1,800 towards this. We would like to leave this appeal open for few more days before we send this contribution".

I am glad to meet you all through this special message/appeal. As you all are aware HCPPA NSW has been implementing number of community related projects. This year we have initiated (or continuing) the following major projects:

  • Continue to support Vishvamadu educational/community facility. This year we are funding the teachers' fee, roof repair works for an existing facility, books and power connection. The total contribution for this year at this facility is $1,800
  • Funding for an after school tuition centre for the entire Mullaitivu zone A/L students (325 in total). The total contribution for this is $2,600
  • Support Feeder Schools to Hartley College. Five schools from Vadamarachchi East were selected. HCPPA NSW decided to support Book donation to each school library. Each school will receive Rs.20,000 as the stage 1 support (plus transport cost, total of $970). We will then monitor and consider stage 2 support of another Rs.20,000 each.

We annually commit at least one third of the Kalaizh Chuwei collection of the previous year for community projects. This year we have exceeded this allocation. However, as we all know there are lots of community needs and through this appeal we would like to request a special contribution from you to fulfil one of those.

Special Appeal

In partnership with Vision 2020, Assist RR has organised four cataract surgery camps restoring vision to nearly 400 patients within the last 9 months in North and East of Sri Lanka. They also provide lenses and consumables to assist surgeries to needy patients at hospitals, where there are house surgeons.

Vision 2020 informed Assist RR that they are struggling to supply lenses and other consumables to hospitals for the cataract surgeries. Vision 2020 mostly depends on donors to supply lenses and consumables. If we could donate lenses and other necessary items at a cost of around $30 dollars per surgery and they will supply these to hospitals in the North and East of SL.

Our target is to donate 50 lenses and other necessary items at a total cost of $1,500. Please consider supporting this and forward this to your friends and family. Your assistance would help to eliminate treatable blindness and restore vision to many vulnerable people back home. Our account details are given below. Please reply back to us (hcppa_nsw@googlegroups.com) if you are depositing any money.

Vision 2020 confirmed that they will arrange list of patients benefiting from these surgeries, and acknowledgement letters from Vision 2020 and the surgeons. HCPPA NSW will also publish these documents on our website.

Report on the Kalaizh Chuwei 2013

The Kalaizh Chuwei (a symbol of Tamil cultural program) by HCPPA (NSW) was held in the evening on Saturday September 14, 2013 at Bahai centre, Silver Water, New South Wales. This event also marked the commemoration of the 175th Anniversary of the Hartley College. As part of commemorating the anniversary a beautiful collection set of souvenirs were released and made available at the event.

The program was split into two halves, with the first half showcasing dance performance (Nandalala) and comedy act (Kalakkapoavathu Yaru?) , whilst the second half entertaining the audience with a live band music. Dr. David Gunaratnam (a Hartleyite) was the chief guest at the event.

Mr. Krishnakumaran, the president of HCPPA (NSW), opened the event with his welcome speech at 5.59 pm. He then introduced the master of ceremonies (MC) for the event. The president invited the chief guest, accompanied by his wife (Mrs. Gunaratnam ) to light the traditional lamp according to the Tamil customs. Following this, one minute silence was observed to remember the fallen heroes and people, who lost their lives during the war.

Ms. Babitha Selvananthan sang the Tamil Mozhi Vaalthu and the Australian National Anthem followed by the Hartley College's Anthem sung by Mstr. Raahulan Subendran.

The First event was the dance performance (Nandalala) performed by the students of Pathmalaya Academy of Fine Arts. This was a Bharathanatya Recital, relating the story of Lord Krishna, directed by Mrs.Pathmaranjini Umashakar. All the students displayed their best dance performance, and kept the audience entertained.

Mr. Subendran, the vice president of HCPPA (NSW) delivered his speech by highlighting the projects and initiatives that the association has been working on for the past year. He also summarised the three key goals of the association, and then thanked all the sponsors, advertisers and members for the ongoing support rendered.

Followed by his speech, the second event commenced. This was the first time a comedy act under the title of 'Kalakkapoavathu Yaru' was introduced by HCPPA(NSW). The performances as individuals and groups were displayed, and the whole audience enjoyed the comedy delivered. As part of this event, the audience were given the opportunity to vote and choose the best performance. Overall, this program was well received and Mr.Arampamoorthy Raguramankumar was voted as the winner. The voting process was coordinated by Mr. P.S.Paramatheva, and observed by Dr. Bala Vignewaran being the judge of the selection process.

Soon after the comedy drama, the audience were offered with a thirty minute break to taste and enjoy the delicious dinner, and also to meet and greet their fellow Hartleyites and community members. This annual event gives everyone an opportunity to meet their fellow Hartleyites and share the stories and experiences among themselves.

For the send half of the cultural program, it was 'Vishwaas', a music group of talented and emerging youth from Sydney. The music group sang well chosen Tamil and other songs by having the Theme narrated in the background. The theme related a story linking to Eelam and the life of the people over there, and here in Australia, which attracted most of the viewers. In addition, the songs kept the audience live throughout the second half beyond doubt.

As final part of the evening, the Best student award program was introduced to the audience. Mr.Yoganathan coordinated the award program by briefing the audience about the objective of the award. All the winners of the awards received their respective category of awards from the chief guest in the presence of the president, Mr. Krishnakumaran. Following this, the music group was honoured for their excellent performance both by the president and Mr.G. Vaseeharan. Mr.Ganithipan Aruneswaran, the music director received the award on behalf of the group.

Kalaizh Chuwei program has grown from strength to strength every year in terms of the audience and the types and quality of programs. Without any doubt, everyone had a wonderful evening!

Assistance for mid-term exams...

[25 June 2011]

Principal advised us that the school is conducting mid-term examination for students from grade 6 to grade 11 to motivate them in learning and also to help them to face the term examination with confidence. The examination will be conducted in Tamil, Mathematics, English, History, Religion and Science. As the A/L teachers are busy with additional classes and coaching they are unable to mark the additional (mid term) exam papers. Principal requested financial assistance to encourage past students waiting for university admission to help in marking the papers. The estimated cost of this evaluation examination is Rs.10, 800/=. This proposal was immediately acknowledged by a member of HCPPA (NSW) and he came forward to support the cost in full. We greatly appreciate his contribution towards this and transferred the requested fund to the school on 20th of June 2011.

The national chess competition has been conducted at provincial level for past several years. We are very proud to inform that this year our Under 15 and 19 teams were crowned as champions at the Provincial level in the competition held at Vavuniya Tamil Maha Vidyalayam between 17th June to 19th June 2011.

Hartley college has been the champions for the last five years at the Provincial level. Principal thanks all HCPPA branches for their generous financial support which lead towards this achievement.

[25Jun2011]

K Mahinthan Kanagasabai Mahinthan from grade 10 has been selected to participate in Asia Pacific level competition from All Island. This is a mathematics quiz conducted every year. Remembering the timely help...

[June 2011]

One of our sponsoring activities outside Hartley College was for the Puttalai Maha Vidyalayam. Puttalai gave refuge and lifeline to Hartley College during the turbulent period between 1984 to 1989.

As a token of appreciation HCPPA (NSW) recently donated three custom made office cupboards with glass windows to show case their own trophies and medals. Its financial worth was Rs.80,240/= or equivalent to AUS$680.

We are humbled to receive this letter of appreciation from the Principal, Mr.M.Anandeswara.

Shortage of Geography Teachers

[June 2011]

Recently Department of Education transferred the Geography teacher from Hartley College to his previous station at Kilinochchi and couldn't find a replacement. This is mainly because of shortage of teachers in this field.

This sudden transfer affected 39 students from first year & second year batch. In previous year's students who took Geography as a subject in G.C.E (A/L) Arts stream secured effective z-score in the examination.

The school is fortunate to arrange a talented tuition teacher, a graduate Mr. Nanthakumar, to teach the students for two years. Mr. Nanthakumar will be paid Rs.5,000 per month except the vacation time(9 months). The total cost will be Rs.90,000.

The Principal made the request for the funds through Global Trust to all the HCPPA branches. A few committee members from NSW branch volunteered to cover the cost of first year expenses. The HCPPA (NSW) worked as a conduit and, in early April, transferred Rs.48,400(AUS$ 400) to school directly.

Funding of Laboratory Materials

[June 2011]

A shortage of laboratory materials especially the Chemicals and Laboratory utensils hindered G.C.E (A/L) students conducting experiments and the G.C.E (A/L) exam. The materials required were acids & chemicals. The school estimated the total cost to be Rs.120,000 & requested all HCPPA via Global trust to cover the half of the cost(Rs.60,000) & the rest to be covered by the fund allocated by the Department of Education.

Immediately HCPPA (NSW) came forward and in April, absorbed half the cost of Rs.60,000 to enable students to conduct their experiment without any delay or interruption.

Old Computers have been replaced...

[June 2011]

About 20 computers were sent to Hartley College in early May 2011 with the support of HCPPA NSW. We are happy to inform you that we have successfully cleared all the computers from Sri Lankan customs even though we had some difficulties initially and we would like to thank all those who helped to achieve this here in NSW and in Colombo. These computers will replace old computers in Computer Learning Centre, set up and maintained by HCPPA NSW.

NSW branch supports needy students

[June 2011]

By now all of you would be aware of the creation of a specific fund by our branch to support students with unfulfilled basic needs and this fund is named as "Basic Necessities fund". This marks a shift in our assistance to the school which in the past almost exclusively focused on rewarding and recognising accomplished students. Basic Necessities fund aims to assist students from economically disadvantaged families to perform at their best. The principal along with the staff identify the students who need support.

We have been funding Rs. 50,000 per year until last year and this has now been increased to Rs.100,000 to cater for more students. This is not funded from the branch income but by individual contributions by a few Hartley College past students living in Sydney. If you are interested to know more about this please contact us through our group e-mail.

Our support towards Batticaloa flood victims

[June 2011]

We broke the barriers by not only supporting Hartley College but also the wider community. There is an absolute necessity for this in the current environment in Sri Lanka. Further, our cultural program is patronised by not just the old students of Hartley College.

Our association donated Rs. 60,000 to Ramakrishna Mission for flood relief works. We are committed to provide similar support in the future as well.

Letter from Ramakrishna Mission thanking us for our contribution.
